Prism News vs Ground News: what's actually different
An honest comparison. Both compare news across the bias spectrum. Here's what each does well — and where Prism focuses differently.
Ground News built the category. They were first, and most of the people reading this article are reading it because they found Ground News, liked the idea, and started looking for alternatives. We owe them credit for that.
Here's the honest version of how we compare.
What Ground News does well
- Strong aggregation across many outlets. Hundreds of sources, consistent bias tagging, mature classification pipeline. - Blindspot detection. Flagging stories one side is over- or under-covering is the genuinely novel feature they pioneered. - Mobile apps with push notifications. - A pro tier with deep analytics for power users.
If those are what you need, Ground News is excellent and we recommend it.
Where Prism is different
We chose a different focus on purpose:
1. Free and ad-free, forever. Prism's core features — bias-balanced story comparison, blindspot tagging, source ratings — are free with no signup. No paywall on the analysis. We don't sell premium tiers because we don't want a business model that rewards keeping anything important behind a wall.
2. [Prism Lens](/lens) works on any article from any publisher. You paste a URL — even from a publisher we don't aggregate — and Prism analyzes the bias lean, highlights every loaded phrase in context, and surfaces what was emphasized vs likely omitted. No other aggregator does article-level analysis on external links.
3. [Story Stress-Test](/lens). For any analyzed article, we generate the strongest steel-man counter-argument from the opposite political side. This is the fastest cure for confirmation bias we've ever shipped.
4. [Source Receipts](/lens). Auto-fact-check every load-bearing claim in an article. Each gets a verdict: VERIFIED, CHERRY-PICKED, OUT-OF-CONTEXT, MISATTRIBUTED, or UNVERIFIABLE.
5. [Ask the AIs](/ai-perspectives). Side-by-side comparison of how GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.5, and Gemini 3 Pro each answer the same news question. AI is a news source now whether we like it or not; treating AI framing as a real bias category is overdue.
6. [Cross-Platform Snapshot](/cross-platform). One screen showing how the same story is being framed across Hacker News, Mastodon, Lobsters, Reddit, X, Bluesky, TikTok, Substack, YouTube. No other comparison tool we know of does this.
7. [Predict the Spin](/predict). Daily prediction game: before a known event, predict how Left/Center/Right outlets will frame it. Scored against actual coverage the next day. Gamifies media literacy.
8. Trust transparency. Our corrections log, AI-disclosure badges, source-rating methodology, and IFCN application packet are all public on /trust.
The honest summary
Ground News is a polished, mature aggregator with a paid tier. Prism is younger, free forever, and oriented around tools that make you a sharper individual reader rather than just a better-informed one. Pick the one that matches your goals — and read both if you want, because that's exactly the thing this whole category is about.
