Misinformation

False or misleading information spread without intent to deceive — the spreader believes it's true.

Misinformation is the most common form of false content online because it doesn't require any malicious actor. People share things that flatter their priors without verification. The distinction from disinformation is intent: a misinformed person is mistaken; a disinformer is lying. The downstream effect is similar, which is why platform moderation often treats them the same in practice even when policies separate them. See also: disinformation, bias.
