Embargo
An agreement between a source and journalists to delay publication of information until a specified time.
Embargoes are standard in science journalism (peer-reviewed papers go to reporters days before public release so they can write informed stories) and corporate PR (product launches). Embargo breaks — when one outlet publishes early — are major professional violations and can result in being cut off from future briefings. The system depends on mutual trust and is occasionally strained, especially when a competitor publishes from an apparently unrelated leak.
