Byline

The credit line naming the journalist (or journalists) responsible for an article.

The byline is the public accountability anchor for a piece of reporting. Multiple bylines indicate collaborative reporting. The absence of a byline ("Staff report") indicates either light editorial labor or, occasionally, anonymity for safety reasons. Bylines matter because they let readers track a reporter's work over time, identify specialty areas, and hold individuals accountable for errors. The shift to AI-assisted writing in 2024-2026 has raised new questions about bylining AI contributions; some outlets now disclose AI involvement explicitly.
